Still Going…

editing2

So here’s the deal, editing takes time, lots of time and energy and brain cells that are currently on hiatus, courtesy of a concussion I suffered last week. I’m a little sluggish, those who know me would say more sluggish than usual, but whatever. Anyhow, the point is that it’s taking me longer than I thought to put this book together, more so because I’m a perfectionist and I don’t want to put something out there that’s badly written. Whether you like the story, that’s subjective. This project is for me, I want to prove to myself that I can do it because if there’s two little words I hate the most they are “what if?”, a question I never want to ask myself.

Chile—Andes and The Roaring Pacific

It’s been quiet on the blog. First off, I was away on vacation in Chile for nearly a month and did exactly what one should do on a vacation—NOTHING! Second, I had intended to blog, but unfortunately I had no access to internet, which in a way was a godsend. For the first time in years our family (husband and three boys) used the time to bond and truly enjoy each other’s company without the interruption of any electric devices (aside from a kindle). iPhones, which were only used as cameras and iPads were a nearly extinct accessory for three weeks. I have to admit at first it did take getting used being completely out of the loop and I mean completely out of the loop. There was a lot of “this is what it was like when we were kids” from my husband and I. A lot of time was spent outdoors and really, we didn’t want to miss a thing. Mountains and ocean were part of our playground so to speak.

Now that we’ve been back for a couple of weeks, I have gotten back into my writing, bent on editing this second draft in hopes to have it ready soon, which is one of the reasons I’ve been ignoring social media. Staying off twitter and Facebook is important even if they are a necessary evil. For a writer they are time suckers if not used appropriately. Hours pass before you know it and little gets done— I’m a sucker for gossip and reading other’s blogs. On that note, hi, ho, hi ho, off to write I go…

On The Play List

So when you sit down to write do you need silence, soft background music or loud head pounding tunes? I have friends who write to Metallica blasting in the background. Others need absolute silence. As for me I like music more for the noise than for any form of inspiration. Usually, depending on the scene I’m writing I pick a song and it stays on repeat for the whole time I write, usually hours. Does it bother me? No. I want the noise not the distraction. For some reason listening to a song over and over again helps me concentrate. Right now as I write this post I have Falling Slowly from the soundtrack Once on—it’s a great song. Yesterday it was Beyonce’s Drunken Love, the day before that, my whole playlist played on. My taste vary dramatically, once Songbird by Fleetwood Mac was on repeat a minimum of seven hours a day for four days. I wrote three chapters with that song playing, not relating it to any particular scene, just needing to focus on one thing.  The television is a big no, no for me, too distracting. If there’s too much going on and my writing schedule goes to shits…

So what’s on your playlist today? Any particular song you stick to? An album or do you create your own playlist?
